The Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship program at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care offers comprehensive exposure to a wide spectrum of foot and ankle conditions in a high-volume clinical practice.

Traditional and innovative techniques are taught covering the gamut of sports medicine/arthroscopy, reconstructive and trauma surgery. Besides teaching the necessary technical aspects that lead to a skilled and confident surgeon, the art of taking care of patients is emphasized. Fellows rotate with three attending surgeons who serve as the foot and ankle consultants to several of South Florida professional and collegiate sports teams. This program is for physicians who have completed an orthopedic surgery residency and would like a comprehensive fellowship experience at a world-class orthopedic institute.

The Fellow will work on a one-to-one basis with three attending physicians and will participate in over 600 cases during the training period

Outside of the operating room, fellows care for a wide variety of patients and work hand-in-hand with the fellowship-trained, board-certified Foot and Ankle orthopedic surgeons from Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. Fellows will evaluate patients in our state-of-the-art sports medicine center where they diagnose injuries and formulate treatment plans.

In addition to community patients, fellows will care for athletes of all levels. Our program provides unique year-round sports medicine coverage for 36 Miami-Dade County High Schools as well as three universities: Florida International University, Barry University, and St. Thomas University and major professional sports teams including: Miami Dolphins (NFL), Miami HEAT (NBA), Florida Panthers (NHL), Inter Miami CF (MLS) and Miami FC (USL). We are also the official sports medicine provider for high-profile sporting events that include: The Miami Marathon & Half Marathon, Miami Triathlon, Miami Open Tennis Tournament and the Orange Bowl.

Additionally, participation in ongoing clinical and basic science research projects are encouraged and protected time for these scholarly activities are built into the weekly schedule. The Institute provides a dedicated research staff that is available to assist on all projects. Didactic sessions include a weekly case review and conference covering a broad range of topics from basic science to pathophysiology to the latest surgical advancements. Fellows will also participate in a monthly journal club, M&M and interesting case conference. Finally, fellows have year-round access to our on-site cadaveric Bio-skills training lab to practice new procedures and hone their surgical skills.

Longitudinal Experiences

Our program curriculum incorporates several longitudinal rotations, immersing trainees in particular areas of study throughout the entire duration of the training program.

Rotations

  • Fellow will spend three days in the OR performing cases at Doctors Hospital OR and at the Baptist Health Surgery Centers located in Coral Gables and Plantation. Fellows will be exposed to a wide spectrum of foot and ankle conditions in a high-volume clinical practice. Traditional and innovative techniques are taught covering the gamut of sports medicine/arthroscopy, reconstructive and trauma foot and ankle surgery.

  • Fellows will spend between one and a half days in clinic evaluating patients with musculoskeletal injuries. Fellows will evaluate patients prior to surgery and follow them throughout their post-op care. Our 49,000-square-foot recently renovated outpatient facility consists of three floors of physician clinics with 42 exam rooms. The new pod concept with “touchdown” staff work areas allows clinical teams to collaborate across subspecialties. Physician offices includes a dedicated Fellow’s Office. During clinic, the allied health professionals that include PA’s (Physicians Assistants), ATC’s (Certified Athletic Trainers), and MA’s (Medical Assistants) support physicians. Our practice currently uses Cerner electronic medical records (EMR) and fellows receive specialized training in this system as part of their onboarding.

  • Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in multiple ongoing research projects within the institute. There are ample support for research including personnel - a research PhD, Certified Clinical Research Coordinators, and several volunteers – and resources such as the medical library and the BioSkills lab. In addition to participating in ongoing projects, fellows are encouraged to perform their own original research projects. Fellows receive a laptop during orientation for their use during the fellowship year, and have a well-equipped dedicated office space.

The Cadaveric Bio-skills Lab is an integral part of the Institute’s educational program and it provides a simulated surgical setting that allows our physicians to conduct hands-on cadaveric evaluations, surgical education, research studies and clinical trials. The lab has broadcast capabilities for a seamless learning experience.

  • Lectures: Faculty and fellows will meet on a weekly basis for lectures following AOFAS guidelines.

    Lectures will cover:

    • Anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and immunology as they relate to adult reconstructive orthopaedic surgery.
    • Pain management for the subspecialty, including recognition of the signs of addiction.
    • Evaluation of practices that ensure and improve patient safety.
    • The program faculty and fellows will meet on a weekly basis to discuss the cases that will take place during the week.

Journal Club: Faculty and fellows will meet on a monthly basis to review the latest journals practitioners.

  • Each year, fellows participate as instructors for the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine Musculoskeletal Course. This course allows them to develop and hone their skills as they teach 4th year medical students.
