    Program Director

    Gautam Yagnik, M.D., fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty Board certification in sports medicine. Dr. Yagnik earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated at the top of his class and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. There he was elected administrative chief resident and was given the Willard Award for the most outstanding resident. He completed his Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship in our program.

    Dr. Yagnik specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He is chief of orthopedic surgery at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. Dr. Yagnik is a team physician for the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Panthers.

    John W. Uribe, M.D.

    John W. Uribe, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree and General Surgery Internship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Miami and an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Hughston Clinic.

    He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive surgical procedures for degenerative conditions of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. His research interests include minimally invasive resurfacing techniques of the knee and shoulder, as well as ligament and tendon restoration.

    Dr. Uribe is the Chief Medical Executive for the Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute; founder member of the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute and founder of the sports medicine fellowship program.

    Dr. Uribe is the Medical Director for the NFL Miami Dolphins and Head Team physician for the NHL Florida Panthers. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

    Keith S. Hechtman, M.D.

    Keith Hechtman, M.D. is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty Board certification in sports medicine. He earned his medical degree at the University of Miami, completed his Internship in General Surgery and Residency in Orthopedic Surgery also at the University of Miami. Dr. Hechtman completed his Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship at the Sports Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Miami. He was Dr. Uribe’s first fellow.

    Dr. Hechtman is a founding partner of UHZ Sports Medicine Institute. He helped establish the relationship between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Doctors Hospital to improve the healthcare of student-athletes.

    He specializes in both sports medicine and arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. He is a professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

    He is the head team physician for Florida International University. Dr. Hechtman also serves as a clinical instructor for physician assistants and athletic trainers at Barry University, Miami Dade College, and Nova Southeastern University.     Thomas San Giovanni, MD is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in conditions of the foot and ankle, sports medicine, trauma and reconstructive surgery. He earned his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed an internship in the Department of Pediatrics at Children's National Medical Center and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Miami.  Dr. San Giovanni completed his Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is regarded as one of the world’s foremost leaders in joint replacement surgery of the great toe. He designed the first anatomically contoured great toe total joint replacement used for hallux rigidus. Dr. San Giovanni is one of only a few orthopedic surgeons that perform great toe joint replacements and is recognized for pioneering the technique.

    Harlan Selesnick, M.D., is a Board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree at Northwestern University and completed his internship and orthopedic residency at the Michael Reese Medical Center. He received additional sports medicine training at Temple University Center for Sports.

    Dr. Selesnick has been the team physician for the Miami Heat since 1988. In addition, he is currently the team physician for the soccer team Inter Miami CF.

    Frantz R. Lerebours, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon specialized in orthopedic trauma surgery and fracture surgery with a background in sports medicine. He has expertise in treating both fractured bones and surrounding soft tissues..  He earned his medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine (District of Columbia).  Completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital and an Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.

    Dr. Lerebours provided sports medicine team coverage for the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Kings while he was an attending physician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

    Luis Vargas, Ph.D.

    Research and Education Coordinator

    Luis Vargas, Ph.D., was an orthopedic surgeon in his home country of Venezuela. Dr. Vargas joined  Miami  Orthopedics  &  Sports  Medicine  Institute  in  1990  when  he  trained  with  John Uribe,  M.D.  He  is  the  coordinator  of  Research  &  Education  at  Miami  Orthopedics  &  Sports Medicine Institute.  Dr. Vargas trains fellows in the Institute’s Bio-Skills Lab, which provides a real-world environment to train future surgeons in orthopedic sports medicine procedures. The state-of-the-art lab simulates a surgical setting and allows fellows to complete hands-on cadaveric evaluations, research, clinical trials, and surgical education.

    Dr. Vargas holds a Ph.D. in exercise physiology and science in sports medicine. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences.  He currently serves as the general secretary of the  International  Society  of  Arthroscopy,  Knee  Surgery  and  Orthopaedic  Sports  Medicine (ISAKOS).  He  is  a  founder  and  board  member  of  the  Latin  American  Society  of  Arthroscopy Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine (SLARD). He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic  Surgeons,  International  Federation  of  Sports  Medicine,  and  Pan  American Confederation of Sports Medicine.
